Through Kusum’s short stories, the reader embarks on many journeys
through life’s varied cycles. We see a couple in old age, the sadness of
prostitution and the brutality of rape, the issue of Aids and the catalytic
trauma of a new bride. Women’s sexuality, is highlighted in stories such
as `The Wives`.
There is some black humour and a macabre thread can be found running
through many stories that are full of surprises, deep imagination and unease. They are
perceptive and sensitive and are written with an easy fluidity that is open to the reader’s
interpretation.
