India: Beyond The Taj And The Raj (Forthcoming)

  - By Raana Haider

An ancient land – immense in its geographical coverage and historical depth - India stretches from the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal and from the Himalayan heights to the Indian Ocean. It is a land
exceptionally diverse in its arts, architecture, cuisine, faith, landscape and people which have produced
fabulous rock-cut temples, palaces of splendour, formidable forts, white-washed churches and magnificent
mosques.

In the Himalayas nestle the ‘Little England’ inspired hill stations of Mussoorie and Kasauli. The desert gave birth to Rajasthani city gems – Jaipur and Udaipur. Early European settlements on the coastline paved the way for the three British Raj Presidency cities of Bombay, Calcutta and Madras which developed into major Indian metropolises. The Portuguese legacy features in Goa while the French ambience lingers on in Pondicherry.

The Taj Mahal at Agra remains the icon of India and the apex of Mughal artistic expression. Hyderabad and Lucknow evolved into epicenters of Muslim learning and lifestyle. Vestiges of the British legacy from its East India Company inception to its Raj imperial rule – first from Calcutta and then New Delhi - find expression throughout India in forms ranging from bungalows to Indo-Saracenic and Bengali Baroque architectural styles; from the legal system to the postal works; from the Public Works Department (PWD) to the Grand Trunk Road (GTR); from fortress-like railway stations to elite schools modeled on Eton
and Harrow.

The author explores and researches the past and present of twenty-two cities and ancient sites in India..‘India: Beyond the Taj and the Raj’ is Raana Haider’s take on this incredible landscape, culture and wonder that is India.
