What happens when ordinary lives are drawn into the world of religious politics?

Two friends, Rahman and Saleem, grow up in a small Indian town. Rahman’s is an ordinary life, of friendship, of work at a roadside mechanic’s shop and Mohini, a first love. His world is also that of Abhujaan, Saleem’s father, who treasures and teaches law as an ideal and who belongs to an era of ethics and principles.Rahman pursues his dreams in the unquestioning belief that he lives in a society that does not define or limit him by religion. This certainty is shattered unexpectedly one day by the arbitrary use of law. He sees his simple path through life blocked by the misuse of power by politicians.

Rahman loves and looks up to Saleem and is caught between radicalism and his own aspirations to better himself. The story races towards what seems the inevitable end to a life which has crossed the invisible lines of religion and sect, and the price paid for doing so. Encounters movingly conveys how deeply the breakdown of law and order can affect individuals and how the normal lessons of childhood are undermined by the misuse of law during times of great unrest, riots and
curfews.
