Eli the Elephant & Tipsy the Hurricane Hero

  - By Margaret Donald

‘Eli the Elephant, A Tsunami Story’, was written to help young children understand what a tsunami is and how to take refuge when the warning signs appear. Margaret then wrote a sequel called ‘Tipsy The Hurricane Hero’ to similarly educate young children on hurricanes.

The stories are told at a level suitable to young readers, are exciting, educational, sensitive and inspiring. Margaret uses animals to tell her stories and the tsunami story is told through the eyes of Eli the Elephant and the hero of the Katrina story is Tipsy the dog. Both stories are based on real incidents; Margaret is Scottish so ‘Eli’, which is set in Sri Lanka, is based on the true story of a little Scottish girl who recognized the warning signs of a tsunami and the fact that no animals were lost during that time because they had retreated to higher ground. Similarly, Tipsy’s family in New Orleans are Scottish and known to Margaret.
